Comparative study of the performance of the CuSum and EWMA control charts

چکیده
This work presents a comparative study of the performance of the cumulative sum (CuSum), as well as the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control charts. The objective of this research is to verify when CuSum and EWMA control charts do the best control region, in order to detect small changes in the process average. Starting from the data of a productive process, several series were simulated. CuSum and EWMA control charts were used to determine the average run length (ARL) to detect a condition out of control. ARL found by each chart which was then, compared. It was observed that the CuSum control chart practically did not sign points out of control for the levels of variation between ^1.0 standard deviation. For these variation levels the EWMA control chart was more efficient than CuSum. Among the parameters EWMA control chart the ones with constant l 1⁄4 0:10 and 0.05, with the respective control limits L 1⁄4 2:814 and 2.625, were the ones that detected larger number of altered positions. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Enhancing the performance of EWMA charts
Control charts are extensively used in processes and are very helpful in determining the special cause variations so that a timely action may be taken to eliminate them. One of the charting procedures is the Shewhart-type control charts, which are used mainly to detect large shifts. Two alternatives to the Shewhart-type control charts are the cumulative (CUSUM) control charts and the exponentia...
متن کاملMonitoring Lognormal Reliability Data in a Two-Stage Process Using Accelerated Failure Time Model
The reliability data is getting used to monitor and improve the quality of products or services. Nowadays, most of products or services are the results of processes with dependent stages referred to as multi-stage process. In these processes, the quality characteristics are affected by the quality characteristics in the previous stages, called as cascade property. In some cases, it is not possi...
متن کاملA Study on the Effects of Trends Due to Inertia on Ewma and Cusum Charts
Unlike a Shewhart chart, the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) and cumulative sum (CUSUM) charts are memory control charts (also known as time weighted control charts) that are used for a quick detection of small shifts in the process mean. Control charts that combine information from present and past samples, like the EWMA and CUSUM charts have the ability to detect process changes ...
متن کاملMixed Cumulative Sum-Exponentially Weighted Moving Average Control Charts: An Efficient Way of Monitoring Process Location
Shewhart, exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA), and cumulative sum (CUSUM) charts are famous statistical tools, to handle special causes and to bring the process back in statistical control. Shewhart charts are useful to detect large shifts, whereas EWMA and CUSUM are more sensitive for small to moderate shifts. In this study, we propose a new control chart, named mixed CUSUM-EWMA chart...
متن کاملBayesian change point estimation in Poisson-based control charts
Precise identification of the time when a process has changed enables process engineers to search for a potential special cause more effectively. In this paper, we develop change point estimation methods for a Poisson process in a Bayesian framework. We apply Bayesian hierarchical models to formulate the change point where there exists a step < /div> change, a linear trend and a known multip...
